A man called Milton walks into town… On the run from his own demons, John Milton treks through the Michigan wilderness into the town of Truth. He’s not looking for trouble, but trouble's looking for him. He finds himself up against a small-town cop who has no idea with whom he is dealing, and no idea how dangerous he is. But Milton is double crossed and badly injured. Unarmed and alone, he flees into the remote Porcupine Mountains with a posse on his tail. His enemies thought they could hunt him down. That was a mistake and, where Milton is concerned, one mistake is all you get. From best-selling author Mark Dawson (the John Milton and Beatrix Rose series), The Sword of God is the latest in the acclaimed series of thrillers that readers love.

The Sword of God John Milton Volume 5 Mark Dawson Books

I'll leave it to others to explore what they did not like about this book. I will only say that like all the books in both the Milton and Rose series, this is escapism at it's best. Fun, fun reads. No slow areas, just action that keeps you turning pages, until the final end. I cannot praise this writer enough. When a new book is released, even if I am reading something else, I immediately set it aside and dive into it. It is that good!

The Sword of God John Milton Volume 5 Mark Dawson Books Reviews

John Milton's fifth book in the series, The Sword of God, doesn't disappoint. Full of more chase scenes, gunfights, had to hand combat, explosions, and escape scenes, John Milton is pitted against a religious cult of fanatics in a small town in America.

I'm a huge John Rambo fan myself so when I started reading the opening scene to this book, it brought back memories of First Blood and the opening scene when John Rambo first wanders into a small town and is picked up by the local sheriff who doesn’t approve of his “appearance”. The Sword of God opens with a like-scene and sets up the action for what is to come.

After deciding to go back into town, John is involved in a bar fight that gets him arrested and he then makes friends with the local sheriff who has taken an interest in John. But someone else has taken an interest in him as well, a local girl whose brother has fallen in with a bad gang that have been accused of robbing several banks around the state.

She asks John to go looking for her brother in the wilderness. John reluctantly agrees because he is driven by the need to help people who need it. Joined up with a female FBI agent, Ellie Flowers, John Milton heads into the forest for a three-day trek and eventually catch up with the thieves.

But there is much more to it than that. They are part of a cult being led by a fanatic in town who has already killed the sheriff and is leading a small army of followers armed to the teeth to hunt down John Milton for interfering. From here on in the story is action-packed with gunfights, pursuits, knife-fights, car chases, and search-and-destroy missions where the enemy is hunting Milton in the wild.

The story, as are all the books written by Dawson, fast-paced and fun to read. You really will struggle to put it down for more than a day, which is more than I can say for most fiction out there these days. This book, as with the others in the series, has a tight plot that doesn’t lag, the characters work to bring the story and pacing to life, and there are no complicated plot points that slow down the readers. It reads like a fast-paced rollercoaster ride, and in the end, serves its purpose to give readers a fun, action-packed and entertaining story.

I’m a huge fan of the Mark Dawson books now, especially John Milton, and have already started on the next book! You should too…
Mark Dawson puts his readers in the picture . He puts you in the mind set of the main character John Milton a man with a lot of baggage but a honest man . Finally freed from his former employer and not being a hunted man , He plays pin the tail of the donkey and finds himself on the roads of upper Michigan . Wandering the by ways and highways camping ,site seeing and refreshing his mind . It's not a easy task and when he wanders into the town of Truth ,Michigan to take a little break from the rainy Fall weather , to get a hot shower a warm meal and night sleep away from the rainy weather. A no nonsense Sheriff is about ready to start Truth ,Michigan on a adventure it won't forget. When He tries to run what it looks like to him a vagabond John Milton out of his peaceful little town . Action packed true to a John Milton adventurer all the way.
I broke into Dawson's John Milton series at book #5, The Sword of God and enjoyed it very much. While at times I felt a lack of backstory (for obvious reasons!), the book stands alone just fine. It was fun to see how Dawson's story grows out of the seed story he mentions, especially David Morrell's Rambo character in his novel, First Blood. Dawson admits his debt to Morrell's story, and in the first chapter of TSOG its influence is very obvious. But then, he does a very entertaining twist on it, very much developing his own story. Despite his similarities to John Rambo, John Milton is very much his own person. Dawson rides the essence of the Rambo story just long enough get up to speed, and get his Rambophile readers hooked, and then turns off into his own territory. The story-line is interesting and fun. The characters have some depth to them and you find yourself caring about them, adding to the book's hook. There's no mystery in the story. You know who the good guys and bad guys are pretty much from the beginning. But there's plenty of adventure and action, which Dawson describes very well. I reserve 5 stars for books that move me or leave me in some way "breathless". TSOG doesn't do that, and I doubt Dawson intended it to. If he wanted to write a truly entertaining adventure/action story, he succeeded in spades! It's lots of fun, and leaves the reader wanting to know John Milton better, and share in more of his adventures. If you enjoy a good adventure/action story, this one's for you!
In a beginning reminiscent of David Morrel's excellent "First Blood" but with Mark Dawson's unique spin, John Milton just wants a bite to eat and a place to sleep in the remote town he is hiking towards. Mostly he wants peace and solitude. Boy, does he NOT get that. Before he can hardly catch his breath he is involved with the FBI, a young girl in need of help, bank robbers, and then a heck of a lot more as the story progresses.

As always, Mark Dawson grabs you and holds you and takes you for a terrific ride. One impressive fact about the Milton series is that each book so very different from the others and yet all of them are totally John Milton adventures. I loved them off and that definitely includes this one. Please keep 'em coming, sir. I'll keep buying and reading 'em.
I'll leave it to others to explore what they did not like about this book. I will only say that like all the books in both the Milton and Rose series, this is escapism at it's best. Fun, fun reads. No slow areas, just action that keeps you turning pages, until the final end. I cannot praise this writer enough.
